A moment of what Jill Brooke calls a “quiet oversight” helped spark her new book, “The Genius of Flowers: What Life’s Most Beautiful Creations Can Teach Us.” It blends science, history and philosophy to argue that flowers shape not only our surroundings, but also how we think and feel.
Before turning her focus to flowers, Brooke built a career as a correspondent for CNN and an editor at lifestyle publications including “Travel Savvy” and “Avenue.” Amid the polished imagery of interiors and fashion spreads, she noticed a pattern. “A painter could draw a few lines and be hailed as an emerging artist, with endless hoopla surrounding them,” Brooke notes. “Yet the florists who decorated these rooms and made them sparkle never even got a mention.”
That realization stayed with her and ultimately became the seed for a broader inquiry. If florists were overlooked as artists, were flowers themselves also being undervalued?
Brooke’s answer unfolds in “The Genius of Flowers,” where she draws on years of conversations with breeders, growers and botanists to explore how flowers influence human life far beyond decoration. She argues that flowers offer lessons in resilience, adaptation and connection—and that their presence has measurable effects on mental well-being. Citing research that shows the sight of flowers can activate the brain’s reward centers much like music or laughter, Brooke suggests they do more than beautify spaces—they help shape emotional experience and even rewire it. When we surround ourselves with their beauty, in art, decor and fashion, she notes, we strengthen the neural pathways that make joy and calm more accessible.
Her advocacy for florists runs alongside this thesis. Through her writing for Florists’ Review and her platform “FlowerPowerDaily,” Brooke has worked to elevate floral design as an art form. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when she was asked by “Aspire Design” and “Home” to create its “Best Dressed Rooms in TV and Movies” awards, she insisted on including a category recognizing florists working behind the scenes.
“Florists use branches and blooms instead of paint but deserve to be viewed as the artists they are,” she says, describing such efforts as part of broader “micro movements” pushing the industry forward.
Those efforts appear to be gaining traction. Floral exhibitions modeled after “Art in Bloom” shows are drawing larger crowds, while flower shops are increasingly hosting events, workshops and cultural programming. The shift, Brooke says, reflects a growing recognition of floristry as both craft and art. Still, she sees her book as a continuation of that push—and as a tool for both professionals and consumers.
“I hope this book sparks conversations between florists and their customers,” Brooke adds. “When someone questions the cost of flowers, florists can show them why they’re not just objects—they’re experiences that affect how we feel.”
Early interest suggests a wide appeal. Parenting groups have responded to chapters focused on teaching life lessons through flowers, while designers and museums are exploring its ideas in creative contexts. Writer George Rush described the book as “a fantastic blend of genres,” likening it to a mix of David Attenborough, Martha Stewart and Deepak Chopra.
For Brooke, the message is simple but expansive: flowers are not merely decorative—they are instructive, influential and, in many ways, essential.
“Florists have always been artists,” she says. “Now, more people are starting to see it.”
